April R. Walkup

April Walkup concentrates her practice in the areas of healthcare counseling and litigation as well as employment law. She focuses on addressing the diverse legal issues that arise throughout the course of her clients’ daily business, both in the healthcare industry and beyond. She prides herself on being able to counsel her clients on all of their business needs, including aggressively defending their interests through trial, if needed. With more than 20 years of experience, April recognizes that quick and efficient solutions allow clients to address crises. She also partners with them to implement systemic changes to minimize the possibility of future obstacles.

On behalf of her health care clients, she addresses issues that include, but are not limited to:

  • regulatory and statutory compliance
  • human research
  • religious objections to treatment
  • consent to treatment
  • advance directives
  • statutory claims of privilege
  • credentialing
In her employment practice, she:
  • helps draft and implement internal policies and procedures, including: employee handbooks, anti-harassment policies and job applications;
  • participates in decision-making related to disciplinary and termination issues;
  • advises on overtime and wage laws and their application to particular work forces;
  • drafts employment agreements and severance agreements;
  • conducts investigations of internal claims of workplace harassment, sexual assault, hostile work environment and discrimination
April practices before administrative agencies, including the EEOC, IDHR, IHRC, Office of the Inspector General, Illinois Department of Labor, and the Illinois Department of Employment Security. She also represents physicians, medical providers, nurses, pharmacists and pharmacies in disciplinary proceedings before the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
