April Walkup concentrates her practice in the areas of healthcare counseling and litigation as well as employment law. She focuses on addressing the diverse legal issues that arise throughout the course of her clients’ daily business, both in the healthcare industry and beyond. She prides herself on being able to counsel her clients on all of their business needs, including aggressively defending their interests through trial, if needed. With 20 years of experience, April recognizes that quick and efficient solutions allow clients to address crises. She also partners with them to implement systemic changes to minimize the possibility of future obstacles.

A critical component of April’s daily practice is advising employers, including physicians, hospitals and managed care organizations, in their human resource matters. 

On behalf of her health care clients, she has addressed issues including, but not limited to:

  • long term care
  • regulatory and statutory compliance
  • human research
  • religious objections to treatment
  • consent to treatment
  • advance directives
  • statutory claims of privilege
  • credentialing

In her employment practice, she has:

  • helped draft and implement internal policies and procedures, including: employee handbooks, anti-harassment policies and job applications
  • participated in decision-making related to disciplinary and termination issues
  • advised on overtime and wage laws and their application to particular work forces
  • drafted employment agreements and severance agreements, conducted investigations of internal claims of workplace harassment
  • established employee hotlines to report work-related misconduct

April has represented a variety of clients and industries, including: hospitals, nursing homes, hospice facilities, casinos, printing companies, trucking companies, municipalities, investment corporations and not-for-profit agencies. On behalf of those clients, she has defended against claims of sexual harassment, wrongful termination, retaliation, pregnancy discrimination, gender discrimination, and disability discrimination at the state and federal court levels.

She has practiced before administrative agencies, including the EEOC, Office of the Inspector General, Illinois Department of Human Rights, Illinois Department of Labor, and the Illinois Department of Employment Security. She also represents physicians and other healthcare providers in disciplinary proceedings before the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
