Mari Schaan was raised in North Dakota and Minnesota. She currently practices civil litigation defense, including transportation litigation, product defect, premises liability, professional negligence, and medical malpractice defense with an emphasis on catastrophic injury claims.
Following undergraduate studies in art and philosophy at North Dakota State University, Mari attended and graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law. While obtaining her degree, she clerked for a law firm practicing primarily criminal defense, family law and estate planning.
In 2008, Mari began the practice of law in Nevada as an associate at the law firm of Alverson, Taylor, Mortensen & Sanders. She worked on a wide variety of civil litigation defense cases, including medical malpractice, product defect, motor vehicle accidents, workplace accidents, and premises liability. Some of her clients included medical practitioners, construction and general industry companies, tire manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and lessors, and automotive and recreational vehicle manufacturers and distributors. Mari also defended countless freight carriers, transportation companies, and individual drivers involved in motor vehicle, motorcycle, and recreational vehicle accidents. Mari’s practice also included defense of numerous stores, hotels, casinos, and restaurants involved in premises liability litigation.
As an associate and then a partner with Alverson, Taylor, Mortensen & Sanders, Mari prepared for and conducted motion hearings and trials in Nevada Federal and District Court, mediations, arbitrations, and administrative hearings before the Nevada Department of Administration. She also focused her efforts on marketing both locally and nationally for the firm.
In her last year as a partner at Alverson, Taylor, Mortensen & Sanders, Mari transitioned her practice to focus on industrial claims, specifically workers’ compensation subrogation, subsequent injury, uninsured defense, and OSHA citation defense. Mari along with three of her colleagues from Alverson, Taylor, Mortensen & Sanders used their collective experience and expertise and opened the law firm Hooks Meng Schaan & Clement, practicing exclusively industrial claims.
In 2018, Mari returned to general litigation by accepting a partnership with Hall Prangle & Schoonveld.
In her spare time, Mari enjoys the outdoors and the Vegas Golden Knights. She has two German Shepherds and has recently taken up archery.
