Mary Nielsen focuses her practice on the defense of healthcare providers, human services/not-for-profit providers and other insured entities and individuals, including hospitals, physicians, nurses, CRNAs and physical, occupational and speech therapists. Mary has defended her clients in a wide variety of cases involving emergency room medicine, orthopedics, critical care of adults and infants, urology, pulmonology, infectious disease, neurology, radiology and internal medicine. Her work also includes the defense of long-term care facilities in cases involving pressure ulcers, falls, elopement and abuse. In addition, Mary has significant experience defending not-for-profit agencies running residential and day programs for disabled and mentally ill adults and children, rehabilitation centers and therapeutic day schools in cases involving death, serious injury and abuse/neglect.

Mary has engaged in multiple mediations and settlement conferences over the years. Her trial experience includes numerous first chair verdicts and spans multiple counties in Illinois.

Mary currently heads the HPS Wheaton office and also maintains a Chicago office. As a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, Mary works to maintain the quality and excellence of all services provided to HPS clients.

Mary’s previous experience includes work at Lord, Bissell & Brook, Chicago, and Sandberg, Phoenix and von Gontard, St. Louis.

Mary has spoken at Grand Rounds, at staff and resident meetings and at risk management conferences regarding consents, the anatomy of a malpractice case, strategies to avoid or mitigate litigation exposure and current developments in case law and litigation trends.
