Last year, Hall, Prangle and Schoonveld presented the inaugural Amy Kane Memorial Award to Shelley Doi-Taketa. Established in memory of Amy Kane, an esteemed HPS partner who passed away in March of 2022, the award celebrates her legacy of excellence in practice, alongside her qualities of kindness, empathy, and generosity of spirit. It serves as a tribute to Amy’s character while supporting individuals who exemplify similar traits to further their legal abilities. Those who have worked closely with both Amy and Shelley emphasize their similarities. "Amy was a perfect example of someone who never got ruffled," says Jennifer Ries-Buntain. "Shelley is the same way. In the face of the stress of this job, Shelley is poised."

As part of her award, Shelley also received a monetary stipend for educational pursuits aimed at enhancing her growth as an attorney, perfecting trial skills, or fostering mentorship and leadership. In January, Shelley completed a training program and officially became a Certified Trainer with Inspiring Comfort. Inspiring Comfort is a social good company committed to nurturing human care and connection, advocating comfort as a teachable skill. Explaining her decision to become a Certified Trainer with Inspiring Comfort, Shelley remarks, “Working in the legal profession, all of us deal with stress, burnout, and balancing our work with our own personal lives. Inspiring Comfort brings a step-by-step approach to teaching skills to enhance empathy and strengthen connection.” She hopes to apply her newfound knowledge to strengthen her relationships with her colleagues at HPS and forge stronger connections with clients.
