Respecting Pride in the Practice of Law: A Primer on Professionalism

June 29, 2023

On June 28, 2023, HPS hosted a discussion, Respecting Pride in the Practice of Law: A Primer on Professionalism. This interactive discussion was led by Christopher Rapisarda, MSW, and HPS Partner, John Travis.  The presentation focused on professionalism and respect in addressing gender identity and sexual orientation in legal practice.

The versatile presentation educated attorneys on LGBTQ+ topics, terminology and strategies for respect and inclusiveness in the practice of law when addressing colleagues, coworkers, clients, witnesses and opponents. The opportunity to attend was also extended to the entire firm as topics like LGBTQ+ terminology, intersectionality, and the LGBTQ+ community at a macro-level view are important for everyone to understand.

We thank our guest speaker, Christopher Rapisarda, for coming to our Chicago office to give this insightful presentation. Christopher is a Chicagoland native who earned his B.A. and M.S.W. from the University of Michigan. He has dedicated most of his career to the intersection of education, equity, and community and has over 10 years of experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion work. Christopher currently works as the Managing Director of Instructional Programs at Urban Gateways, a non-profit organization that supports education in the arts. We also thank HPS Partner, John Travis, for educating us on appropriate use of language and application of professional conduct in the legal space. Not only does this insight help prepare our workforce in the legal community, but allows for a higher level of acceptance, understanding and respect in all aspects of our lives.
