Appellate

Representing clients’ interests before, during and beyond trial and the jury’s verdict

HPS’ appellate practice is renowned for both its versatility and accomplishment. Our attorneys have argued in state and federal jurisdictions across the country, with notable recent victories such as a 2018 Illinois ruling that reduced a plaintiff’s award by $15 million. The result is that the HPS team has been ranked as a Tier 1 appellate practice by U.S. News and World Report in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

More remarkable is that HPS’ appellate group has achieved such far-reaching successes with a small team. Practice co-chairs Hugh Griffin and Jacob Goldstein—both based in Chicago and both recognized in multiple years as “Super Lawyers”—oversee the practice, while a third partner, Salt Lake City-based trial lawyer Tawni Anderson, also contributes.

Much of the appellate group’s work comes in support of HPS’ litigation efforts, beginning during the initial trial where it provides strategic consulting with an eye toward ensuring that relevant arguments are both thoroughly developed and preserved for subsequent appeals. The team also works frequently on appeals in cases arising from cases handled by other firms. While many of our appellate cases arise from matters relating to medical-malpractice and health law, the appellate group is often also engaged to handle matters involving constitutional and statutory claims, product liability disputes and insurance coverage issues. In health-related cases, clients benefit both from the appellate team’s extensive experience and also from the firm’s broader expertise related to medical-malpractice and health law.
