Florida Settles with Walmart over Opioid Claims

Pensacola, FL
October 26, 2022

In the latest round of settlements between Florida and chain pharmacies over opioid-related claims, on October 20, 2022 Attorney General Ashley Moody announced a $215 million settlement with Walmart. As a part of the agreement, Walmart agreed to provide 672,000 overdose-reversing naloxone kits to first Florida first responders over the next ten years.  According to the CDC, Florida had 7,231 overdose deaths in 2020, and was just behind California for the second-most such deaths nationwide.

The Walmart settlement was announced about five months after Florida and Walgreens reached a $683 million settlement over similar claims, obviating a contentious four-week jury trial that was in process in Pasco County, FL.  Prior to the Walgreens trial and subsequent settlement, Florida had reached an aggregate settlement of over $900 million with defendants CVS, Teva, and Allergan.
