BIOGRAPHY
Mike Tarpey defends manufacturers and health systems against claims of catastrophic product liability and medical negligence. He represents leading manufacturers based both in the United States and in Asia, and his clients hail from a range of industries such as trucking and automotive, hardware, and industrial equipment. He also represents multiple university-affiliated hospitals.
Tarpey is an accomplished trial lawyer with a long track record of obtaining favorable verdicts for his clients. His cases have included not only matters related to product liability and medical malpractice, but also construction, breach of contract, insurance coverage, and rail and transport law. He is a member of the HPS Catastrophic Trial Team, an elite group of attorneys who can practice across the country via pro hac vice admission. In addition to his trial work, he has argued at the appellate level, appearing before both the First District Appellate Court of Illinois and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He has extensive experience in mediation and arbitration proceedings, as well.
Tarpey has been recognized as a Leading Lawyer, has served on the board of the Chicago Trial Lawyers Club, and has spoken around the world on topics related to product liability. He began his legal career as an associate at Baker McKenzie in 1989, and then moved to Donohue Brown Mathewson and Smyth, LLC as a founding member in 1995. He joined HPS in 2008.
