BIOGRAPHY

Tawni Anderson is a medical malpractice defense attorney and leader of HPS’ Salt Lake City office. She defends hospitals, physicians and other healthcare providers against an array of claims, especially in cases involving neurological, neurosurgical and psychiatric issues, as well as those related to emergency medicine.

Tawni also represents practitioners in administrative matters concerning licensure, and counsels healthcare providers on a variety of corporate, transactional, and regulatory matters.

Before establishing her practice in medical malpractice defense, Tawni spent several years trying cases from a different perspective—as a plaintiff’s lawyer—in addition to gaining substantial appellate experience early in her career. That unique combination helped propel her to standout success as a trial attorney who has appeared before the Utah Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the District of Utah. Some of Tawni’s cases have gone all the way to the United States Supreme Court.

Tawni is a past president of the David K. Watkiss - Sutherland II American Inn of Court, based in Salt Lake City, and appears regularly on Utah Business magazine’s “Legal Elite” list. She also has served on the Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee for the Utah Judicial Council, the policy-making body of the state judiciary, and the Appellate Rules Advisory Committee of the Utah Supreme Court. In addition, she served on the executive committee of the Utah State Bar’s Appellate Practice Section for seven years, including a term as chair. Although appellate advocacy remains part of Tawni’s practice at HPS, her main focus is now litigation defense.

Tawni’s preparation for a career in healthcare law started early, when she bought a copy of Gray’s Anatomy with allowance money at age 7. Her interest in nature isn’t limited to human physiology, however: she is a certified master gardener who grows peaches, Jerusalem artichokes and heirloom tomatoes at her family’s northern Utah home.
