Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: A Conversation on Family, Culture, and Legacy with Desirae Gillane

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month Jeramy Ashton, Associate, sat down with his colleague Desirae Gillane, Paralegal, both from our Salt Lake City office, to discuss what this month means to her. During their conversation, Desirae opened up about her family's rich history, culture, faith, and favorite family traditions.
Desirae shared, “Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the incredible accomplishments of my ancestors; the traits we as the Lopez (Romero) family carry with us today. Six generations ago, my ancestors immigrated from Mexico and settled in New Mexico. Since that time, family was always first. My great-grandparents, New Mexico natives, raised thirteen children. My great-grandfather taught me to get out and go to work so I can provide for my family. However, my great-grandmother taught me what it takes to be a mother (A LOT of hard work). Caring for thirteen kids, she engrained the importance of love and sacrifice. As the family grew, our obligations did too. However, our family continues to get together for annual family golf tournaments, camping trips, and holiday parties to reflect on the journeys and essential lessons learned from our ancestors. I grew up in a family where we had FIVE generations alive and well with so much love. That tradition continues with my grandfather, mother, me, my son, and my wonderful grandson. We engage in family history efforts (my uncle even wrote a book) to preserve the memory and celebrate the future of our family. I am so proud of where I came from as well as who I came from. I am proud to raise my children to know about their ancestors, culture, and roots of their work ethic.”
