BIOGRAPHY

Mari Schaan concentrates her legal practice in civil litigation defense, including matters related to transportation litigation, product defect, premises liability, professional negligence, and medical malpractice defense, with an emphasis on catastrophic injury claims.

She joined HPS in 2018 after spending a decade at Las Vegas-based law firm Alverson, Taylor, Mortensen & Sanders, then working briefly as one of the founding partners at Hooks Meng Schaan & Clement, a firm focused exclusively on industrial claims. Her clients at those firms included medical practitioners, construction and general industry companies, tire manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and lessors, and automotive and recreational vehicle manufacturers and distributors. Schaan also defended an array of freight carriers, transportation companies, and individual drivers involved in motor vehicle, motorcycle, and recreational vehicle accidents. Schaan’s practice also included defense of numerous stores, hotels, casinos, and restaurants involved in premises liability litigation, as well as industrial claims related to workers’ compensation subrogation, subsequent injury, uninsured defense, and OSHA citation defense.

Schaan has substantial experience with both motion hearings and trials in Nevada Federal and District Court, as well as mediations, arbitrations, and administrative hearings before the Nevada Department of Administration.

Schaan grew up in North Dakota and Minnesota, so it’s natural that since moving to Nevada she’s become an avid fan of her city’s hockey team, the Vegas Golden Knights. She studied art and philosophy as an undergraduate at North Dakota State University before earning her law degree at the University of North Dakota in 2008. She also loves the outdoors, and counts archery among her hobbies.
