Laura J. Ginett

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Leader of HPS’ long-term care practice

BIOGRAPHY

Laura Ginett is a trial lawyer who defends healthcare providers against allegations of malpractice. She has significant experience in representing hospitals and long-term care providers in cases involving assaults within their facilities. She also has substantial expertise in cases that involve psychiatric issues, including involuntary commitment and suicide. Such cases often involve high financial exposure, as well as an urgent need for crisis communication and media management—Laura provides clients with a sure and steady hand in those circumstances.

Laura leads a large HPS team focused on issues related to long-term care. That area of her practice mostly involves skilled nursing facilities such as Legacy Healthcare, but also encompasses providers of hospice and other in-home care, as well as outpatient physical therapy. Additionally, she is part of HPS’ Catastrophic Trial Team, an elite group of defense attorneys who are available to appear pro hac vice in high-exposure medical-malpractice cases in jurisdictions throughout the country.

For more than 20 years, Laura has been a member of the elite Society of Trial Lawyers, serving on its board from 2005-2007. She is also an associate member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and has been recognized frequently as a Leading Lawyer. She speaks frequently on issues related to psychiatric malpractice, as well as topics such as telehealth and long-term care. Since March 2020 she has served on a task force focused on COVID-19 litigation both in Illinois and nationally, as well as pandemic-related promulgations by state and federal agencies.

An Illinois native, Laura earned her law degree from Boston University before returning home to begin her legal career at the Chicago office of Locke Lord, then called Lord Bissell & Brook. She became a partner there in 1999, and then joined HPS in 2015.
