HPS Team Prepares to Run the 41st Annual Providence Hood to Coast Relay

August 1, 2023

Help support HPS as they prepare to participate in the largest relay in the world!

Team Legal Briefs on the Run, Eric Schoonveld, Mari Schaan, Zach Thompson, Reina Claus, David Kalimuthu, and James Kearney will be participating in the 41st Annual Providence Hood to Coast Relay, The Mother of All Relays, on August 25-26, 2023, running approximately 200 miles from Mount Hood, to Seaside, Oregon. The course consists of 36 legs varying from 3.5 miles to 7.8 miles with each team of 12 running three rotations. The team will start at 6:30 am and end around 6:30 pm each day.

Hood to Coast Relay is through Team World Vision, an organization that provides clean water to communities in South Sudan. Over half of the population in South Sudan lives in poverty and lacks basic infrastructure, including clean water. Every day, nearly 1,600 children die from contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper hygiene, which is more than AIDS and malaria combined. Worldwide, 748 million people lack access to clean water, and World Vision is committed to sustainably providing safe water to as many communities as possible. $10,000 = clean water for 200 people!

Please consider donating to support our team and to help raise money to fight the global water crisis!

Meet Our Runners

Eric Schoonveld

After a life threatening bicycle accident in 2010, my rehabilitation led me to begin running, cycling and swimming in order to walk normally.  I connected with Team World Vision in 2012 and began participating in longer and more challenging endurance events including multiple relays and Ironman events.  Raising money to provide clean water in Africa and the support of friends, colleagues and family has been an incredible motivation.

Mari Schaan

The best life experiences and learning begins at the end of your comfort zone, and this is definitely outside of mine. I’m not a runner or even someone who enjoys exercising, but I love the outdoors, bonding experiences, and most of all a “BHAG.” Finishing this race with my team and supporting a great cause alongside World Vision could not motivate me more.

Zachary Thompson

This will be my first relay race.  When I first heard our firm was putting together a team for Hood to Coast to raise money for charity, I thought it sounded like a fun way to help a great cause, but I didn’t think I was in good enough shape to help out.  With a push from Reina and Mari, we started training for and ran in a Raiders 5k, and I haven’t looked back since!

Reina Claus

Hood to Coast will be my second relay race, but I am calling it my “come back race”.  I started running (for fun) in college and have participated in dozens of half marathons, a triathlon and ran the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco.  I took a break from running when I had my son 5 years ago, but this race and the ability to help raise money for World Vision has gotten me back to training 5 days a week and I couldn’t be more excited for it!

David Kalimuthu

I joined the team to support the great cause of providing clean drinking water to others. I also could not pass on the opportunity to run a unique relay race in a beautiful part of the country. I began running in college after his days of playing soccer were over.

James Kearney

I am a casual runner that gets a little bit more serious with my cardio training once I sign up for a race.  I was interested in running the Hood to Coast race to both spend time out of the office with my colleagues, and in furtherance of helping World Vision raise money for charity.  My prior running experience includes 1 ultra marathon, 5 marathons, and 2 half marathons.  Raising money for a charity has been an important component in my previous races. I have raised money for the First Lieutenant Andrew John Bacevich Memorial Fund when running the Canadian Death Race in 2014. I have also raised money for Parkinson’s Foundation when running the Chicago Marathon in 2021 and 2022 and will be doing so again in 2023.  I am looking forward to running my first competitive relay race and to spending time with all the runners I’ll meet along the way.
