  • HPS cofounder

  • Led HPS’ expansion into markets such as Las Vegas and Salt Lake City

BIOGRAPHY

Mike Prangle is a leading trial attorney who has taken more than 50 medical malpractice cases to verdict. He also has substantial appellate experience, arguing before the First District Court of Appeals, the Illinois Supreme Court and the Nevada Supreme Court.

As one of HPS’ founding partners, Mike also has played a crucial role in executing the firm’s expansion beyond its Chicago headquarters. He has helped build a strong foundation for the HPS offices in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver and San Diego, and remains an integral part of the team in Las Vegas.

Mike has been integral in hiring attorneys, winning new business, instilling the firm’s collaborative culture and developing a track record of success in each new market. He also has demonstrated in each new jurisdiction that the HPS model—fearless and skillful defense of healthcare providers at trial, along with exceptional client service and a collegial workplace—translates anywhere.

That includes trying—and winning—lots of cases. Mike has taken 59 cases to verdict, prevailing in a sizable majority of those trials. He has received repeated recognition as a Super Lawyer and a Leading Lawyer. In 2023, he was also selected into America’s Top 100 Attorneys in medical malpractice litigation, an honor that less than 1% of professionals in the U.S. will receive. He has represented a broad range of clients, ranging from accounting firms to trucking companies, but his passion is medical malpractice defense.

Mike puts it this way: ”My mission in life is to defend nurses.”

He’s proven equally adept at team-building, with the HPS’ satellite offices taking on the same unique cultural attributes that have defined its Chicago practice.

“We've succeeded in large part in being the place that cares about its people,” says Mike. “Lawyers are competitive people, but we want the competition to be outside the firm, not within the firm.”

Mike’s own competitive drive dates back to his time at the University of Kansas, where he received All-America honors as a diver. He remains an active athlete, completing several marathons and triathlons, including the 2021 Chicago Marathon. Mike and his family live in a southwestern suburb of Chicago.
